It has been raining for weeks and weeks, well it seems like it at least. For the last two weeks there has been so much rain. We have tried to enjoy the short spurts of rainlessness and today was no different. The original plan was to go check out some waterfalls about 30 mins away. Sadly they and the trailhead were in hiding due to construction on the road. Not wanting to waste our cloudy but rainless day we decided to take our packed lunch and explore Ondonoseto Park.
A sign that you can't read due to wear is always a signal of fun ahead! Here is where my optimism of this hiking being better than the last waned. Truthfully it wasn't as bad. There were stairs... THERE ARE ALWAYS STAIRS... but there were WAY less. Humidity at 200%, two weeks of rain combined with the work of rooting wild boars. made for a bouncy soft surface (similar to walking on the tundra in Alaska). As you can see below the soft loamy stairs were an improvement on the uneven stone ones of the last hike. There were steep parts but overall a stroll in the park compared to other ones. Mt. Mitsumine is 380m above sea level. From one side you can see the Hiroshima Bay and Kure (photo on the top) and the Seto Inland Sea on the other (photo on the bottom). Once at the top there is an observatory that is perfect for a picnic. The hike was great after being stuck in the house for a week, the walls were closing in on me as the kids climbed them. This is a great path that was minimally horrible for my wheezing but allowed the kids to billy goat their way up while getting to use their outdoor voices (aka their normal volume). Which was perfect as a thunder storm came rolling in after we got home and we have at least two more days of rain coming our way.
