Waking up to a sunny day we headed out to Miyajima to check out Mt. Misen. We rushed out the door to take the bus to the train to the other train to the ferry to find our adventure for the day.
The main goal of this trip was to get to the summit of Mt. Misen. It is about 1,600 ft above sea level and is the highest peak. There are 3 paths to get there the Momijidani, Daisho-in, and the Omoto. We rolled the dice and decided to take the Momijidani. Turns out it is the shortest route but the steepest.
I would say this hike was 66% stairs. While walk through the woods was beautiful, my chubby butt was puffing on my inhaler and giving myself a pep talk like I was about to fight Apollo Creed. Luckily this particular is not popular so no one heard me tearing my self down or building meyself back up...."You got this, do 10 more steps and you can take a break.... It's ok if you stop at every bench, no shame to take as many breaks as you need girl!" Side note- eating oysters before a hike is not something I would personally recommend. I DID eventually make it to the top, though lets not get caught up in the details of how long it took me, and it was well worth the trip. Before you reach the summit you get to Misen Hondo and Reikado Hall. The Hall houses the flame that was said to be lit by Kobo Daishi and was used to Flame of Peace in the Peace Park in Hiroshima. My favorite part was all of the Buddhas, some had hats and scarfs and some were so itty bitty. After about 100 more stairs you hit the summit, it was stunning. There is an observatory that you can enjoy a sit down, a little shade and the panoramic views of the summit. Travel Tips This trip is great if you have a JR/ IC pass. We were able to use our IC pass to pay for all the bus, trains and ferry trips. Get an early start as they close up shop around 5pm. We arrived around 12 and with the hike made it back down the mountain in time to watch every one close up shop and couldn't explore the shopping street more. Make sure to have coins with you when you get to Misen Hondo so you can buy yourself a cold bevie. The cold drink after a long hike is a must but the vending machine takes coins. Always helpful to have a bag for your trash as trashcans are few and far between and a wash cloth to dry your hands as there are no hand towels and most hand dryers have been disabled due to Covid.
